The Prince Is a Diabolical Burlesque
There's no proof that machiavelli ever tried to get this book into the hands of the every man. He didn't even have it published in his own lifetime. The only person he sent the manuscript to worked in the medici court. Given that, it's hard to read it as a satire meant to disgust the masses and form republics. Then there's the perspective that the whole thing is just a big joke. This perspective has been put forward by scholars like garrett maddingly.
