Only if we're extremely lucky are we likely to find, you know, something that is a recognizable fossil microbe. And even some of the chemical signatures that we usually associate with life, aren't there may be some onliving processes that can produce the same kind of signatures. So i think nazaa have recently come up with something called a ladder of life, which is sort of different layers of evidence you might hope to build up.
