There appear to be some very interesting indications that might be really favorable targets for these, what are sometimes called the cycle plastigens. Some of the effects seem to be quite durable with, say, the existential distress in terminal cancer patients and also for nicotine. If it can be corroborating that there is this neuroplasticity and we'll learn to use it properly, then imagine how extraordinary it is to be able to generate a window in time whereby exposing you to a stimuli under the effect of the hallucinogenic drug could strengthen a particular memory.

Nora D. Volkow, MD, is Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) at the National Institutes of Health.
