Xerxes's Plan to Build a Pontoon Bridge

Xerxes decided to build a pontoon bridge across the dardanels, which is not a narrow distance. He also ordered the digging of a canal across the isthmus of mount athos, modern day greece. These are massive feats of engineering but they were done and completed in order to speed up an army that was hundreds upon hundreds of thousands troops large.
