The Slavery of Allen County, Kentucky
In the early 1860s, a Kentucky family owned a number of slaves. The husband kept chains in the basement when he wanted to discipline one or two of them. When Civil War broke out, word began to spread among the slaves that it would be better to escape and run north. After they escaped, the man returned home empty-handed and full of rage. Fueled by his anger, he descended into the basement where he shot and killed both captive men.
