The writer grew up in a small town of 20,000 people outside of Buffalo. Her parents were insistent that she and her brother not get stuck in their hometown. At age 12 they let the kids shadow lobbyists for two weeks unpaid. They would then come home and work for his dad's best friend who ran a construction company.
