In 1935, someone in Independence, Iowa, was prescribed Limburger by the local doctor. When it got there, postal employees smelled it through the paper and they sent it right back. The two postmasters decided that the only way to resolve this was to have a smell off. They meet in Dubuque, Iowa, which is sort of between the two towns.
