The Importance of Perception in the History of Christianity
After a dour critique of Neoplatonic Theurgy, Augustine moves on to the subject of Christian miracles. When they looked directly at Yahweh, those patriarchs were well aware that they were seeing the invisible God in a material form - though God himself was not material. On the subject of perception, Augustine writes that modern Christians make invisible offerings to their invisible deity in the form of prayers and praises no less real than the meat offerings of old.
