Allyship is a double bind of like, I want to assert myself. But if I assert myself too much, I'm going to get called a name or like I've just mommed you. People who are slightly lower status who try to step up do get punished by the group quite often. The interesting thing with allyship is kind of what happens in the brain of the person being an ally and does it activate threat networks? That would be a fascinating question.
