The new English of the mid-16th century were a bit horrified at what they found in Ireland. They saw Gaelic life and customs, not one wit, and they saw it as backward. As part of their mission then was to bring to the Irish what they termed as civility. This is remarkably parallel to lowland Scots and their attitudes towards Gaelic highlanders in Scotland.
