The Catacombs

Over several decades, hundreds of thousands of human remains were transferred from Paris' cemeteries to the tunnels underneath the city. In some areas the bones were carefully arranged in alternating patterns to form walls. The space is one of the deepest and most elaborate parts of the catacombs with two levels and nine spiral staircases. Today, when Gaspard visits this part of theCatacomb he likes to linger for a few minutes. He finds the silence peaceful and meditative.
