Jackie Wilson was signed to Chess Records, but they didn't like his sound. They hired Billy Davis as a songwriter and cut him with songs he'd written for the four tops. The two men hit it off musically so they decided to collaborate on songs along with Gordy's sister Gwen - who was dating Davis. Anything any of them wrote on their own would also get credited to them as a group,. And they were going to write songs for Jackie Wilson.
