Using Old English Roots in Modern English
In the late 18 hundreds, an english priest and poet named william barnes tried to revive the old inkhorn debate by insisting that foreign words be replaced with new words. Barnes approach was to break down a lone word into its basic elements and then reconstruct the word using old english roots. He also revived old words that had largely fallen out of use or had become antiquated,. like chapman for merchant and gleeman for musician, and leechcraft for medicine. In the next episode, we'll look at mary's death in 15 58, which ushered in one of the great periods in english history - the elizabethan period.
