In the mid eighties there was a really a concerted attempt to push ai out into the real world using what was called expert system technology. Many companies found that the stuff just didn't work, and they were spending tons of money on consultants to try to make it work. The bottom line, they weren'ta seeing a profit from it. And i worry a bit that we might see similar disappointments.
