The Implications of Research in Context
In 1991, when Microsoft Research was founded, one of the founding research groups was a 3D computer graphics research group. At Carnegie Mellon University and at Microsoft Research, we don't have 3D computer Graphics research anymore. And so now, if we think about inevitable futures, well, it's looking increasingly inevitable that very general forms of artificial intelligence are inevitable. That just seems so much more disruptive, so much more profound, and so much more challenging for all of us than the cancer and neurological disease thing.
