The Inflection of the E in Old English
English had inherited a lot of E's at or near the end of words thanks to the Old English inflectional system that had eroded over time. Printers would put them in and take them out as needed to justify the margins in a line of text. There were still a few lingering inflections in the language that used that letter E, and many of them still exist today.
