The Mathematician Is a Weird Character
There's a continuum. People at higher levels pay more attention to some issues that people lower levels don't. And so these public intellectuals are being more social than the mathematician who sits in their office. But this doesn't mean they don't like they also have to have expertise. They've just chosen to develop some of the skills that will allow them, you know, the, that would allow the guy who wanted to be Brady to be more like Brady.
