Ashur Banipal - The First Assyrian King to Read
The reign of ashubanipal is, without doubt, the golden age of the assyrian empire. One of the most interesting aspects of his character is that he was possibly the first assyrian king to be able to read. Up until this time, reading wasn't considered a particularly kingly activity. Kings were supposed to take part in more manly pursuits like hunting and fighting.
