By the 1930s, we've got folks like William Hewlett and David Packard apparently meeting on the football field there at Stanford. Then you really move into the radio age with the invention of the vacuum tube triode. The first real Stanford startup is federal telegraph. It's essentially the same thing at a technical level as the transistors that would be invented to replace them.
