Tunisia's Arab Spring

In 1956, Tunisia declared independence adopting a constitution akin to France's highly centralized presidential system. Opposition parties were banned until 1981 and even then had little or no influence over the reigning party. Despite this, Tunisia was relatively progressive under its two presidents. The 2014 elections were a resounding victory for the secular Naday-Tunay coalition who won 85 of 217 seats compared to the moderate Islamist Na'ad-day party who won 69.
