The Dangers of Parties in the Constitution
John Avlon: The Founders didn't think parties wouldn't emerge. He says they wanted a government that would be hard to negotiate and work at cross-purposes with the people. Parties are more or less the natural outgrowth of that sort of thing, he says.Avlon: If we ask what safeguard the Founders' thought we would have under the Constitution, it's not party, it's institutions.
