Work on the Coffee Plantations
The native people didn't have their own land to grow food onny ore, that land had been turned into coffee plantations. The european owners weren't going to be doing that themselves. In order to kind of provide for their basic needs, which they had done in the past, and part by farming, they began to work on their plantations. They showed up at the plantations expecting to work for 12 hours and get paid in food and a small cash wage.
