Forget What?

Forgetting does not come easily to the women in our family, writes Anne Lamont Hill. We exhausted my mother by shutting down conversations with questions about her husband's whereabouts and what she would do if he didn't return. She never asks him about a future where he does not come back. When she is alone, she prays that he will return to her. Their silence is steady and it endures.
