William Byrd lived a very long and productive life. He was probably born about 1540, and he died 400 years ago in 1623. Still in his twenties, he became the organist and choir master at Lincoln Cathedral. Became one of the musicians of the Chapel Royal - Queen Elizabeth's court musicians. Was granted a 21-year monopoly on music printing in England.
