It's amazing that this existed because after the Alhambra decree kicked all the Jews out of Spain, it became criminal to even possess Judaeica. There were whole communities of people who retained their Judaism under secret cover. This one apparently survived by making it to Venice, which at the time was a... Free city. It was his own city. They had a Jewish ghetto, but a very prosperous and bustling one welcoming all comers.
