Abortion goes back as early as human recorded history. Abstinence was obviously an option, but they would not be commonly used. Condoms retained a stigma well into the 1900s. People thought that if you jumped up and down after having sex, you could shake out the sperm. They probably weren't very effective. It might have been dangerous.
