In the late 16th century, there was an inventor called John Payne. He came up with a treadwheel, which was kind of an inclined wheel that you walked on. And it was either John Payne or the Lord Mayor of London who suggested maybe a version of this treadmill could be placed in a new London bridewell. It became sort of a part of kind of prison, prison reform.
