The Death of the Emperor Honorius

In the early fifth century Emperor Honorius moved his capital to Ravenna. Milan was threatened by the Goths under their fearsome leader Alaric. The western half of the empire was already overrun by many non-Roman visitors, not guests. St Augustine writes how unimaginable it is that Rome could be conquered by some non-Roman tribes. It's an astonishing thing that nobody had expected.
