It's very hard to actually drill down and figure out causality in like a scientific sense so really nobody knows but where I've seen the research dig first is less on sort of what are the various things that are giving rise to this affective polarization. Social media gerrymandering various the types of things candidates say partisan news could all be giving rise to it there's an even earlier question which is why are politics so emotional in the first place.
