The War of Ideas in the United States
I was also very struck in the book about how there's a war of ideas going on here. That on one hand, you have this idea that entangling alliances, getting involved overseas, is corrupting of democracy itself. On the other hand, you've got the likts of frederick jackson, turner and mahan who are arguing that actually manifest destiny has to be spread abroad if american democracy is going to retain its vibrancy. So ths, as i say, an intellectuallistener, i think that that ideology and ideas are very difficult to disentangle from from geo politics.
