The Secular Discontents of the Modern World
The secular discontents of the modern world. The main subject of this introductory lecture to Marxism because we are trying to find out first of all the nature of its appeal when it came on the scene. These discontents have found their sense of life eloquently voiced by philosophers, novelists, poets, essayists and artists. They headed above all the modern world's celebration of achievement. Just think of how Kierkegaard and Dostoevsky poured out their hatred and contempt on the great industrial exposition that occurred in the middle of the century with its crystal palace. Such people of course were right from their own point of view to choose such a symbol to identify what they hated.
