Ares and the Hill of Ares

The Hill of Ares was founded by the Amazons when they invaded Athens. The Partonon Fries depicts him as a peaceful agrarian god, but he is usually depicted as a male warrior. He's also regarded as an ideal of manhood in Sapho for example. In his Homeric hymn, he linked with Cemus, so something like law imposed from above and justice signaled by the hill of Ares. When Mars comes along, how is Ares transformed into this slightly different god that is the Roman god Mars?
