Is Emergence a Dangerous Concept?
Emergence is when the properties of a system are not easily derivable from its components. David Chalmersa classified two types of emergence, what he called weak emergents and strong emergencs. It's important for us to know that that's how nature is playing out. That's how complexity arises from simplicity. But it can also be used to give legitimacy to nonsense or hide untenability of an idea. When you do not know how to defend your theory, you appeal to magic. And that's most often happening with materialists who say consciousness is an emergent property of matter but one day we will figure this out.
