Socrates learns from Deotima about the inner ascent using eros as a motor to reach the highest realities, specifically the beautiful itself. Deotima questions whether Socrates is worthy of the initiation and introduces the concept of anagoge, the inner ascent, towards the ultimate ground of beauty.
