I think thinking about it historically is really useful because I think there's like a weird mix up between what we think of as pristine ecologies and different historical periods. The further back in time you look the more primitive those ecosystems are the less functional. We know that species tends to get more complex over time going from single-celled organisms to multicellular for example. Ec, ecologies ecosystems evolved in tandem with the development of individual organisms.
