There was a kind of speculation that all these newly enfranchised poor whites were going to create a separate class. So white trash goes, goes way back. And I think part of what we saw, at least in my youth and in my twenties was a co-optation of white trash as a term of pride. A lot of punk rockers and cool kids saying like, "I grew up white trash"
