Shot Spotter Is a Narrative Context for Police
Police do not function as community members operating in the pursuit of communal safety. They operate in opposition to communities targeted for criminalization and pacification, writes Tanisha Johnson-Smith. Shot spotter manufactures the urgency of an active threat, offering situations where there is likely no risk, she says. The more often incidents like this occur, the more often they will result in abuse, dehumanization, the indignity of arrest or even the death of a marginalized person said Johnson- Smith.
