One idea is that consistently going to bed and waking up at different times affects our circadian rhythm or our body clock. This then throws our bodies various physiological processes out of sync, for example, this may affect cell division leading to cancer. Another idea is that having a medical condition like cancer or heart disease which many of the participants did may affect sleep either by affecting those physiological processes or just the anxiety of living with such a condition.
