The Battle of Atlanta
William Tecumseh Sherman was a grizzled, grim-faced general with red hair and piercing eyes. Ulysses S. Grant trusted him more than any other general to conquer Georgia in 1864. He slowly forced Johnston south toward Atlanta with flanking maneuvers that caused minimal bloodshed on either side. On July 30th, Union forces had spent weeks digging a tunnel under the enemy trenches. But their plans went awry; Confederates surrounded the hull and shot down hundreds of trapped Union soldiers.
