From the very foundations, monasticism played an important role in Christian society. After monasticism flourished in the desert, it began to flourish within the walls of cities. Most monastics in the Western tradition don't even wear their habits anymore. They lost the nuns that used to work at hospitals, for instance, and in education centers - they've become secularized.
