The Origins of Eukaryotes

Current thinking places the origins of eukaryotes at more than two billion years ago. They arose from a process of endosimiosis, a bacterial cell taking up permanent residence inside an archaeal cell. Today's mitochondria are the descendants of that bacterium. The interesting thing about having mitochondria is it effectively allows you to have multibacterial power without the overheads.
