The Origins of the Ottoman Empire
The Genissary Corps was an army of slave soldiers, highly trained and disciplined. They were recruited mainly through a system called the Dvshirma. It forced conscription on Christian communities - not Muslims or Jews but only Christians. Many boys who were requisitioned would rise to become officers in the military forces.
