The Racism in American Culture During World War II
On October 21, 1939, Roosevelt formed the advisory committee on uranium. This committee gathered information on nuclear studies already in progress and funded scientists exploring applications of uranium. In May 1940, Szilard and his team discovered a form of uranium dubbed U-235 which had a massive explosive potential that far exceeded anything else scientists had discovered yet. The National Defense Research Committee banned publications covering their research and discoveries; they allowed only natural-born United States citizens to work on uranium research.
