Before the K-2 and the Cretaceous, I think it was the dinosaurs that stopped the mammals really expanding. The KT boundary defines the end of the mise-zuré. Another important factor is the increase in oxygen levels from about 200 million years ago. That's the base for the evolution of mammals to the present day.
