Paramount said they weren't able to screen sliver for critics until the day before it opened. LA Times suggested they were hiding the film from critics. Usually means filmmakers are worried that negative reviews could diminish box office returns on the crucial first weekend. Slivers' reviews were scathing because of the rush factor, but also because it was extremely fashionable in that moment to at best condescend to Sharon Stone and at worst, vilify her.
