Dopamine as a Signal of Value in the Basal Ganglia

The forebrain consists of the cerebral cortex, which is where much of our higher order processing goes on. The basal ganglia are several related ganglia that are at the base of the forebrain. The midbrain is a small collection of nuclei in between the forebrain and hindbrain That consists of the substantia nigra and the ventral tegmental area - two areas that are main sources of dopamine. And then the pawns connects the forebrain to the cerebellum; it's involved in sleep, breathing, swallowing, controlling your bladder,. Hearing, equilibrium, taste, eye movement, facial expressions, facial sensations and posture.
