The Importance of Empathy in Novels

I've got to admit, I read a couple of academic books skirting around this area and people kept saying, can we just think about the people themselves? And I do think yes, and we have these scraps and pieces. This is a very early story. It's 1800 because the span of this book is essentially from the 1780s to the 1870s so we're not quite mapped on to Victorian period here. The creature leaps again, and a few of the feathers come loose, flutter down upon the dust-strewn flags. It straightens, bows, the crowd applauds, pennies are thrown, and somewhere in the centre of a grimy face, a smile
