Until he was 16, no lesbian mother at the time had ever been awarded custody. The disputes in the courts were always to do with breakdowns of heteronomative marriages. It was considered that if you were a lesbian, you were by definition, an unfit mother. They wanted to know whether i wanted to keep the baby, because i wasn't married. There was always that problem of having to outwit the aut ties before they could snatch him away - so to speak.
