Chief Justice Roberts wrote the majority opinion in Gruder v. Bollinger, a case that could lead to an end to affirmative action programs at public colleges and universities. The decision was 5-4 split with Sandra Day O'Connor writing for the majority. John Avlon: It's very typical of Chief Justice Roberts but it is a very well written opinion. He says eliminating racial discrimination means eliminating all of it.Avlon: They never really defined a compelling interest. 20 years later, says the court no end is in sight.
