The Normalization of Mediumship
Mediumistic experiences are integral to many religious traditions throughout human history. In the West today, these can be found mostly in spiritualist churches. Many participants in Roxborough's study spoke about having an overwhelming fear that what they were going through was a form of mental illness. Such religious reframing of anomalous experiences through contact with a normalizing framework echoes early work by Chadwick and Bertwood.
